Soul Tithing

I have a friend, a facilitator here at Changing Times, who tithes each time she makes a deposit. When she first told me about it I immediately thought back to the pleas I would hear in church about the importance of tithing. It was something one did once or twice a year, usually around the holidays. But when she told me her personal experiences of joyous tithing I was impressed. See, my friend tithes to whoever fed her soul since her last deposit; whoever fed her spiritually or emotionally.

I am honored to say that I have been the recipient of a couple of her checks. One day as I was making my bank deposit which included one of her checks and thought back to the conversation that we had a few days before that brought a moment of clarity for her, I was really touched and inspired by the whole process. That afternoon I sat down and wrote out my first, what I now refer to as, my Soul Tithe.

Explaining the whole process to my accountant, John, was also fun. The conversation went something like this:

John: "So let me get this straight. I'm not sure I understand. You are going to start sending out random checks, for no real reason, to people who are NOT non-profits so it can't be taken off your taxes? Is that right!!??"

David: "No John, not exactly. Yes, they most likely will not have non-profit status and so it won't be tax deductible but that's not important. It won't be random. It will be to people who, in one way or another, have fed my soul or enriched my life in some meaningful way." John: "Okay, I understand that. But why are you sending them money?"

David: "Let me give you an example. I love to write. It absolutely thrills my heart to do so. I write an inspirational column, usually what I am feeling or experiencing in that moment and I send it out, completely free, because it is a sheer joy to do so. And inspiration comes back to me, many times greater, all the time. I get letters from customers, publishers send me books, record labels send me CD's, people come into my store and they inspire me greatly. It's a law of the universe, John, that whatever you give out, joyously and without conditions or agendas, will come back to you many fold.

"So when someone feeds my soul or moves me in some way, by sending them a thank you note with a check tells the Universe several things. One, that I acknowledge that I am grateful that my souls gets nourished and whatever we express gratitude for in our lives also increases, so my soul just continues to get fed. Second, I also acknowledge that, for me, Spirit is the source of all my abundance and money is nothing more than energy and a symbol of abundance. By sending money, in unconditional gratitude, I am honoring the process of soul-nourishing abundance, in all it's forms, flowing to me and through me to others from Spirit. And by honoring the process in that way, it manifests more of it, both for myself and the people receiving it. Does that make sense, John?"

John: "I guess so. It's all rather new to me. So if I just give away money it will come back many times over?"

David: "Anything you give out in joy, without conditions, whether it be love, knowledge, money, healing, etc. will always come back. If you give away money with the intention that you are doing it so more money will come back then no, it probably won't work because there is an agenda attached to it. John, when you give something away, from the soul, in joy, and then release it without any concern if it comes back or not, magic happens."

With that John left. He is a good accountant and always is looking out for me.

I will also go so far as to say that I believe we are "tithing" constantly with the energy of our thoughts. We are constantly sending out to the universe, by virtue of our thoughts, the energy in our heart and soul. So take a look at what is continually coming into your life. It will give you a good indication of what you are 'tithing' outwards.
