The ceremonies of our lives. Just recently I was invited to witness an ancient, sacred, Jewish ceremony. I love ceremony and tradition. It has the power to reawaken our conscious thinking to how vast and interconnected life is. While I am not Jewish myself, I felt enthralled and inspired by the Rabbi’s words. We are all connected as a family of humanity. Our saints and mystics tell us that we are connected, totally and completely, on a soul level with each other, all of nature and our creator. I have heard the analogy that from a three-dimensional viewpoint we exist like individual islands separated by water. But if you remove the water each island is just an expression of the same piece of bedrock. So do we exist in Spirit. For me, taking part in sacred ceremony allows me to open up to that expansiveness of spirit. It affords me the opportunity to step beyond three-dimensional thinking and experiencing. One can easily create sacred ceremony in one’s everyday life. One of my favorite authors tells a story about how he and his wife have created a ceremony over cooking spaghetti. Personal ceremony can sanctify our lives and elevate what was once perhaps commonplace to something more enriching. What we are doing, in truth, is simply giving expression, creating manifest form or a three-dimensional mirror to the sacredness of our own soul. I have a Tibetan singing bowl in my bedroom. The first thing I do when I leave my bed in the morning is, to use a Buddhist expression, “invite the bowl to sound” by gently striking it with the wooden mallet. As I do so I take a moment to let the sound fill the room and then I give thanks for the day and the adventure it provides me. I take a moment to focus my thoughts on my intensions for the day. The last think I do at night before climbing into bed is again strike the bowl. As the sounds fills the room I give thanks for the night and its gifts. Each time takes less than a minute yet that simple ceremony thrills my heart. Sacredness, like love and abundance moves through us, to us, as us. Enjoy life's sacred journey.
